The Wheel of Five isn't that bad after all

The Disc of Five, who doesn't know it? The well-known Wheel of Five was introduced in the Netherlands in 1953 1 . The Wheel of Five is recommended by many dietitians and nutritional educators to serve as a guideline for a healthy diet 1 . But unfortunately this tool has an old-fashioned image among many and there are also many popular diets in circulation, which often unjustly negates the benefits of the Wheel of Five.

The Disk of Five consists of, you would not expect, 5 different compartments 2 :
Fruit and vegetables: Sufficient fruit and vegetables reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, colon cancer and type 2 diabetes.
Spreads and cooking fats: Unsaturated fat (found in oil and low-fat margarine) is good for the blood vessels.
Fish, legumes, meat, egg, nuts and dairy. In our previous blog we told you why proteins are so important, so be sure to take a look there :)
Bread, grain products and potatoes: By choosing whole grain products you reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer.
Drinks without sugar such as water, coffee and tea.

For a responsible diet, it is important to eat a varied diet, to maintain an energy balance, to deal well with temptations, to eat more sustainably and to observe food safety 3 . Products with too much salt, sugar, trans or saturated fat and too little fiber do not fall within the Wheel of Five 2,4 . In addition, products that do not contribute to a healthy diet or have negative health effects if you take too much of them do not meet the guidelines of the Wheel of Five 2,4 . But this doesn't mean you shouldn't take any of this. There are daily and weekly choices. Whether a choice is a daily or weekly choice depends on the number of kcal, the amount of saturated fat and salt per portion 4 .

According to the Wheel of Five, you should consume 250 grams of vegetables per day, which is still quite a challenge for many Dutch people 5 . That is also one of the motivations for the Grünten team, to be of value and to make this as easy as possible. Namely through our Veggie Oats!

Eating outside the Wheel of Five every now and then is fine for your health, but not too much or too often 2,4 . The guidelines of the Wheel of Five can provide guidance for developing a healthy lifestyle, making responsible choices and making sustainable choices that benefit people and animals. A handy tool that allows you to eat what you are used to and at the same time you are on the way to healthy living!
